DANTE ALIGHIERI X SALVADOR DALÍ
Two Astonishing Artists Separated by 700 Years Explore the Human Condition
Travel back in time to 1321 in Italy, where Dante Alighieri, after dedicating the last 15 years of his life, took his final breath. His legacy would live on through the masterpiece he had spent years writing – the Divine Comedy, a work of poetry that would become renowned as one of the greatest literary works of all time.
Fast forward to 1950, the Italian State commissioned the infamous Spanish Surrealist, Salvador Dalí, to illustrate Dante’s ground-breaking literary work in honour of his 700th birthday. However, the commencement of the project caused uproar amongst the public, resulting in the commission’s cancellation. But nothing could stop Dalí.
For the next nine years, Dalí immersed himself in the project, determined to create a masterpiece that would rival the Divine Comedy itself. With 100 watercolors and illustrated prints from an innovative woodblock method, Dalí unleashed his creative genius to bring Dante’s work to life.
Witness the stunning collaboration of two of the world’s greatest artists, separated by 700 years. Through their collaboration, they explored the myths, delved into the human condition, and captured the power of love through fantastical illustrations, cementing their place in history as creative visionaries.
